Camper Pies
camping recipe

Category: Beef   Rating: 8.4
Backpacking: No Effort: easy Serves: any Prep time: 1-30m

Ingredients:
  • ground beef
  • potatoes
  • onions
  • carrots
  • margerine or butter
  • dry onion soup mix

How to Prepare:
For each "pie" get two squares of aluminum foil and place them on top of each other (you will need it to be this thick as you will be putting this in the coals of your fire). For each "pie" put one hamburger, sliced onions, sliced potatoes (make sure they are thinly sliced or they will not cook well), sliced carrots, a tablespoon of butter & some dry onion soup mix (this adds excellent flavor). Seal up your "pie" and place in the coals. Cook for 30 to 45 minutes or until done. Make sure the coals are red hot but don't put them in the flames. Enjoy!

CAMPING TIP

You can make your own light weight, instant cooking, beans for backpacking by doing the following: Cook the beans in a pressure cooker following normal directions and timing. When the cooking cycle is done, release the pressure as quickly as possible but remain safe. When the pressure is released, immediately drain the beans. Air dry them for several days, turning them until they are thoroughly dry. The beans may be used in any recipie, like chili, with TVP and a packet of chili spices. They will be light weight and will cook quickly since they only need rehydration.
