Cacao-Chili Wilderness Mocha

Inspired by classic Mexican flavors, this wilderness mocha blends instant coffee, cocoa powder, and a pinch of chili for warmth and invigoration. Just boil water over coals or on a camp stove, mix, and savor a rich, lightly spicy morning pick-me-up in the wild.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee medium or dark roast
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or maple syrup to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground chili powder ancho or cayenne, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or small packet
  • 1/4 cup powdered milk or milk alternative optional for creaminess

Instructions

  • Add water to pot or kettle and bring to a near-boil over fire or stove.
  • Remove from direct heat and stir in instant coffee, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, chili powder, and vanilla.
  • If using, whisk in powdered milk until smooth and dissolved.
  • Pour into two mugs. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  • Sip hot, ideally by the fire.

Notes

Instant ingredients minimize cleanup and pack weight. Stir cocoa and milk powder thoroughly to avoid clumps. Adjust chili heat for your group’s taste. Drink immediately for warmth; cool weather favorite.
